ROKetship IS my life in Korea. Author/Illustrator Luke Martin has perfectly captured the experience of being an expat in Korea. It is often hard to explain what life is like to those who haven't lived here, but he has certainly nailed it on the head!

His clever depictions of both the obvious and more subtle aspects of Korean culture and life as a foreigner are funny and insightful without being insensitive or insulting. You know you've got gold when upon reading every comic, one's immediate response is "It's so True! I remember when that happened to me....".

This book is ideal for both foreign expats with experience in the Land of Morning Calm who have tried to explain to others what their life is like, those considering moving to the ROK, or anyone who appreciates reading about other cultures.

Summer in Korea

I was informed my first week back to the hospital at school that I needed to get my bulletin board which is out in the hallway in order, pronto. Good thing my mother was here and creative genius! She made the summer in korea back ground while my students made the projects. My 3-4th graders di dthe ice cream cones to learn about summer while the 5-6th graders did summer brochures about what they were going to do.

My student, Taeji made this brochure. Notice the extreme fire action going on in the center fold. What is hwak you ask? Good question...

I have really talented students!

Today, couples can freely ask their friends to give them money to pay for a date! Couples also exchange gifts made of silver, and announce their relationship to their friends.

Han River Cruise

This past Saturday, the day before

my mom was off to the motherland, we decided it would be super fun to go on a Han River boat cruise. We got off at Yeuouinaru Station and headed down to the water. It is such a nice riverside park area. You could see people flying kites, riding bikes, rollerblading, and pretty much everything else.

Plus there was a light/water show at one of the bridges that we were able to watch as well. All in all a great last night with my mommy!

Good-Byes

This past week I had to say good bye to a few of my friends I have made in Korea.

My two good friends Tim and Brendan. Tim is going to Columbia to study law and Brendan is going back to Ireland! I have met some really awesome people while being here in Korea.

Tim and I have shared alot of subway rides home from FHE (family home evening) together, chatting together about Koreanisms. Brendan the blue tie guy is a great sport for the torment that a few of us girls inflict upon him, plus he has the cool factor since he's Irish!

SpongeBob

SpongeBob Squarepants....

A stupid, pointless, and rather mindnumbing cartoon about a sponge and his friends that live under the sea. My kids love it and well so do I.

Today the 5th graders made a summer vacation plan. Which means on four different sections of their paper, they had to draw a picture and write a sentence, "I will...." During this time, I have kids literally yelling at each other from across the room and walking around, doing whatever.

However during the second half of class, I finally lost my cool with the madness that is my classroom. "Sit down or we are NOT watching SpongeBob!" I've never seen them move so fast and be so quiet for just a long period of time. So we watched SpongeBob in English with Korean subtitles.

Good thing we only have another week of regular classes before summer vacation starts. They are ready and so am I.

Hoobastank & SevenDust

Hoobastank and Sevendust came to Korea! Well, they came to the army base at Yongsan anyways. It was really awesome and I am so glad that my friend, Harold was able to get me on the base to see them!

During the concert there was body surfing and moshing...

I just saw alot of guys get up to body surf and about halfway through the crowd, they suddenly would drop. Needless to say, I did not push my way through the crowd to get up and try it.

Hoobastank was really great, they played their hits and talked about how it was an honor to be there to play for the military. Sevendust, even though they really are not my thing, were pretty great too. I think I knew one song that they played. Their lead singer said, "Thank you is not enough." And it really isn't for what some of the military has to do for their job.
